7 Symptoms That Could Be Signs Of A Gas Leak

Although the cooking gas you use in kitchens in artificially scented to make leaks easy to detect, small quantities of leaks escape our notice. We even assume that the worst mishap that can occur is an explosion, a gas leak can cause mild to severe bodily harm.

First things first, LPG is a highly combustible substance and an asphyxiant gas. However it is not poisonous by itself,  physical symptoms are due to the displacement of oxygen from air, not from toxicity.

If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, make your way to a doctor immediately, open all doors and windows and call professionals to check your gas connection immediately.

Symptom #1: Headaches

If you experience headaches while you are near your LPG cylinder but not outside the house or in different rooms  you are likely dealing with a gas leak.

Symptom #2: Easy bruising

Breathing contaminated air can cause you to you bruise easily.

Symptom #3: Memory loss

When normal inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide is disrupted by other types of gasses, they affect blood cells cutting them out of oxygen which can cause memory loss.

Symptom #4: Leg aches or abdominal pain

Continuous inhalation or high concentration of lpg gas may damage tissues, causing leg aches or abdominal pain. Gas leaks can also manifest in the forms of blurry vision, vomiting and confusion.

Symptom #5: Nausea

The common physical symptoms of a gas leak but also misdiagnosed is nausea. You will notice that you feel better if you open the windows or leave the house.

Symptom #6: Tiredness / depression

It is usual but rare to find that people who breathe contaminated air also suffer from extreme and inexplicable tiredness and depression.

Symptom #7: Asphyxiation

At high concentrations, gas displaces air to cause a lack of oxygen in the blood leading to loss of consciousness, skin turning blue, fainting and even death. Gas at high concentrations can cause arrhythmia in the heart when inhaled. Gas is heavier than air and will travel along floors, settling in low altitudes or basements where kids/pets are most at danger.

Being aware of the risks and understanding the symptoms may save a life! For an added precaution, GasHound® can halt a leak even before you can detect it.
